It's the "mist" thing on the cut stencil that I asked about in the PM....

nah nick this is completely diferent. on this peice where i have labeled parts as mist they just remind me not to spray a flat black and do it as a shading layer. the other one is to help me line up the colour stencil.

That makes sense. I like the idea of these more subtle layers. I tend to just use Gimp to make my layers for me but will be trying to get out of that habit now

What is it painted on?

I would suggest making whatever you cut the stencil out of bigger to prevent the overspray you've got.

The underspray can be cured by using some spray adhesive on the back of the stencil or by holding the bit you're spraying with a gloved hand.

Might also suggest making it a two layer piece so that you wouldn't have that thick black line around it. Come to think of it how have you sprayed that with no bridges?

my knowledge covers just the basics though, dry point, hard ground, soft ground, engraving blah blah blah but i'm able to translate the medium for stencil folks since i use stencils with most etchings anyways

It's all pretty new to me. Just trying it out cos there is a studio down the road that lets me use the press on the cheap.

How long does the ink take to dry on these things. It’s been like 3 days already.
